3 reasons not to run from the police

On Behalf of | Jul 18, 2024 | Criminal Defense |

You may be tempted to run if you hear a knock on your door and open the curtain to see police officers outside. A similar thing may occur if they try to arrest you when you are walking down the street. Or if they try to pull you over while you are driving.

If you know law enforcement is on your case, fleeing may be your instinct, even when you haven’t done anything wrong. The thought of a potential spell behind bars can be upsetting or frightening. Yet trying to get away is typically the worst thing you can do. Here are three reasons why

1. It’s dangerous

You could easily get hit or cause an accident that injures or kills yourself or others if you are trying to outrun a patrol car on your motorcycle or fleeing on foot across a busy road. If you are driving a car, you also put your passengers at risk. If an officer feels you are a threat they might also use force to stop you leading to injury or worse.

2. It could lead to extra criminal charges

A reckless driving charge will just be another burden on top of whatever charge you think the police wanted you on. You could also be charged with resisting arrest. Further charges could arise if an officer alleges you tried to harm them.

3. It’s generally pointless

The police force has a lot of officers. If they want to find you, they probably will in the end.

Running from the police is inadvisable. If you are worried about what will happen in an encounter with them, seeking legal guidance is a far more sensible option.
